"When someone asks me why I cry so often, I say, 'For the same reason I laugh so often – because I'm paying attention.'" 💭 - Glennon Doyle
💕 Emotions are our body's way of speaking to us, guiding us through the journey of life. They are a powerful feedback system, reflecting how we respond to our experiences and surroundings.
Many of us grew up in a culture that didn’t teach us emotional regulation skills.
Many parents, teachers and other adults around us didn’t have those skills and it wasn’t part of the cultural narrative to learn emotion regulation. We learned to ignore, push aside or run from big emotions instead of learning how to “Feel, Heal and Deal” with them (thanks @heytiffanyroe for the tag line - she’s a great account to follow for emotional regulation tips).
Fast forward a few decades, add on a lot of pressure and workload that comes with modern motherhood and a lot of us are finding ourselves experiencing emotions that are big, intense and new to us - like overwhelm, anxiety, grief, anger and rage.
Plus add on top of this the expectation to teach our CHILDREN about emotional regulation and literacy on top of figuring all of this out ourselves! It’s a LOT!
Part of what I do in my work with mothers is gentle validation and support around noticing those emotions, holding space for them and learning some gentle coping strategies.
One aspect of my work is running groups. My clients have an opportunity to come together in a sharing circle and talk about their experiences in a non-judgmental and validating space. Mothers come away from the circles feeling lighter, heard and validated that they aren’t alone in their struggle.
Comparison, shame and self criticism are big stressors for mothers - self compassion is the antidote to that and this comes through being seen, heard in safe spaces and witnessing others stories as well.
Have you been carrying hard emotions in motherhood?
Just like a traffic light, tough emotions are messages that signal us when something needs attention. And sometimes these emotions can be important for nudging us towards change, growth and self awareness.
So let's honour these messages. They remind us that we are fully alive, fully present, and fully human.
